The Unorthodox Road to Well Being

Some people’s response to middle-age is to buy a fancy sports car, and some people go on crazy diets! This is my response!

For the past month, I’ve been on a modified Gerson Therapy diet. The treatment is very multifaceted and so complex that it takes a good month or two to even understand what the treatment is, and sometimes requires hiring a Gerson Coach to help one get set up, buy supplements, buy equipment, and understand the protocol. So as you can imagine after spending considerable time, money, intellectual energy, concentration and focus I am very happy to say that it seems the protocol works! I am only making this observation based on a very limited application of the protocol as I have only instituted a couple of the precepts of the protocol and the majority of the protocol is yet to be implemented. That said, the results are starting to look very good!

The protocol is based upon an organic and primarily vegan diet, juicing of fruits and vegetables, coffee enemas, elimination of water consumption other than soups and herbal teas made with distilled water, elimination of animal protein, elimination of salt, elimination of fluoride, chlorine, benzene, and other common pollutants of our water system, elimination of household toxins such as common chemical cleaners and soaps, filtering of toxic household gasses with a medical grade home air filtering system, supplementation to replace sodium with potassium in the cells, iodine supplementation, thyroid support and stimulation, liver support, B12 and Niacin supplementation, and more.

It’s a complicated protocol, one that requires special equipment, and it’s time consuming, extreme, and to some if not many it sounds outrageous, if not downright unAmerican! Afterall, no red meat? No water? No salt? All organic foods? Filtered air? Distilled water? No cleaners? Are you kidding me! Yes, in fact, it is unAmerican – all Gerson Therapy Clinics are located outside the USA as this treatment is illegal in the USA! Yet many Americans are availing themselves of this protocol to treat chronic disease, by going to the Gerson Clinic in Tiajuana Mexico, or in Europe, or by self- administration in the US.

The list of diseases treated by Gerson would create a line around the block so I won’t bother – suffice to say its extensive. Gerson Therapy (GT) is primarily known for treating cancer; yet the treatment has been used for a multitude of chronic diseases and degenerative disorders, literally too many to list without causing protests, long debates and name calling, so I won’t go there. If one wants to know the list, it is easily available on the web.

I am fortunate that I do not have any chronic degenerative disease or disorder. So why would I bother with such an expensive, restrictive and complex protocol? I’m doing this for the same reason that Joe Cross does his juicing regiment. Frankly I related to his documentary called “Fat Sick & Nearly Dead!” However when I tried juicing, I didn’t get the results. I bought a Vita-mix blender, learned how to make smoothies and switched to a vegan diet, yet I didn’t lose a single pound! I had medical checkups, lab tests and was certain there must be a problem with my thyroid, but thankfully nothing negative showed up. My thyroid results were fine. In fact, everything checked out fine, which in and of itself is great, but that still left me with one major question, how will I lose this weight?  Before anybody gives me weight loss advice, trust me, I tried all the weight loss advice first, including several other protocols, without much success. They tend to work for a short time, sometimes losing 10-15 lbs, then I plateau, and from there it is the war of the worlds to lose a tenth of a pound. Clearly losing weight is imperititve as otherwise I am inviting a diagnosis down the road, which is probably something I don’t want to experience or invite into my life. Thus I decided to take action now rather than later.  I decided upon Gerson therapy precisely because of  it’s thoroughness, it’s application in such a broad range of disorders, and its ability to create more vitality and become more healthy. Why wait till I’m sick, right?

By the way, in the first 4 weeks, I have already dropped 8.5 lbs. I went from 205 lbs to 196.5 lbs. If the past few days are any indication of the future, the more closely I follow this protocol the more weight I lose. Please follow me on this journey. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I think it stands to be interesting! And I truly welcome the company. Feel free to post your comments and questions, or write me at

  1. Love “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”! Great documentary and worth watching for anyone who wants to be healthier (who doesn’t?). Good luck with the program Jonathan! AB

  2. Jonathan: Well, I do wish you a healthy journey. However, do you get your electrolytes checked, and labs done?
What about lean muscle mass: checked?

  3. Hey guys, since we’re talking diet, we all agree! Two that highlight the challenges of aging without some dietary information: The Diet Bill Clinton follows after his bypass: Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease – Esselstyn and the Fast Diet 5-2 – Mosley. All this dieting often does prove useful on many levels, not the least of which is our old friend: Brain Function!
